- Henry is known as the truest believer meaning his heart is so pure and open that he believes in things before anyone else. He also has enough belief for everyone. Henry's belief and trust in the world is infectious. It is the very thing that starts Emma on the path to believing in magic herself. No one wants to dampen that belief so the people of Storybrooke do everything they can to protect Henry even though he is stronger than anyone gives him credit for.
Henry is a stubborn, rebellious child. When he is ten he is feeling very unloved by Regina, so he starts acting out. Regina, wanting to hold onto her son sent him to see Archie Hopper for therapy. Henry struggles to accept his life and Storybrooke as a reality even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. The defining moment in Henry’s life came when his teacher Mary Margaret Blanchard, gave him a storybook of fairy tales because he didn't feel like he fit in.
Henry is smart and figured out that the characters in his storybook were real. He figured out through the book that his mother is the Evil Queen, and his birth mother is the Savior. Henry is a very goal driven kid for only being 11 he now knows that there is a curse that must be broken. Henry is also a child that is not to be deterred by someone telling him no. He tenacious and he eventually wins people over. He convinced Emma to come to storybook by just looking cute.
He is cunning like his parents and not above using a little dishonesty and blackmail. He said he would tell the police that Emma kidnapped him and also lied to Archie about why he missed his appointment. Henry is very much like Neal because when faced with a difficult choice he runs instead of facing it. Henry is idealistic and believes that Emma will stay in Storybrooke despite the fact that she argued with him every step of the way.
Despite telling the occasional white lie Henry puts a high premium on honesty. That is the reason that he openly distrusts Regina in the beginning because she always lied to him. He believed that Emma would never lie to him so when he finds out about Neal and the fact that she lied his faith, in her is shaken. Henry being wise beyond his years eventually forgives his mother for lying. He does make her promise not to lie to him anymore. It is a promise that she keeps.
Henry is a believer in love, especially true love. He is romantic at heart and wants to see his parents happy and most importantly together. He even loves Regina more than she loves herself and it is Henry's love that keeps her from turning back to evil. He was key in breaking the first curse because he was Emma's "true love”. Henry from this point in time has not lost his innocence. He is not marred by losing his father to death or losing his mother’s to darkness. He believes that magic is both good and bad, and he is stubborn enough that he thinks that destroying magic will bring happiness to the people he loves and his family back together.
Henry goes through an ordeal in Neverland, but he never loses his belief that good will win out over evil. It is a driving force on what Henry believes. Despite, Pan trying to convince him that he is alone and no one is coming for him, he doesn't believe Pan for one second. He is good at getting people to believe him, however, and he goes along with Pan biding his time until he can be rescued. Henry is a fighter, he fights against Pan switching bodies with him after he was rescued. He clawed his way back to his family and got them to believe that he was Henry even though he looked like Pan. Gold corrected the situation, but Pan re-enacted the first curse. Henry never wants to be separated from his family, especially Regina. He also understands to a certain degree his Mother's need to keep him safe, even though he doesn't want to leave Regina and Neal behind, he knows better than fight his Mothers when they put up a united front. The first curse would put Emma and Henry's existence in jeopardy and Henry fought too hard to find Emma so he decides to leave with her.
Henry blames himself for the curse that is about to befall his home. He believes that if he had never brought Emma back in the first place, then no one would have to leave. He is gutted as they leave Storybrooke.
And then a year passes.
Henry is a well adjusted typical 12-year-old living the life in New York. He believes that his father died a hero when he was young and is perfectly happy living with his mom playing video games. He and Emma are best friends and help each other out. He trusts Emma implicitly even following her back to Storybrooke when she recovered her memories. He had no memories of the people in Storybrooke, and because he was the Savior's son, was on Zelena's radar. He was oblivious to this, his head either glued to his cell phone or video games. He and Hook bonded during this time, as Hook was his appointed protector. Henry thought he was a cool guy and enjoyed hanging out with him. Henry regained his memories from Regina and True Love's Kiss following Zelena's defeat. He is happy to be reunited with his family and feels that all is right with the world. The only downside is that he knows his father died but believes that he died a hero.
